Pioneer Memorial Hospital & Health Services utilizes the mobile unit of Sanford USD Medical Center for Nuclear Medicine tests. The Mobile Unit is scheduled once a week at Pioneer Memorial's Viborg location.
CAT Scans
The term "CAT" scan stands for "Computerized Axial Tomography" This scan is a computerized x-ray that provides cross sectional anatomy pictures of any part of the body, thus aiding in diagnosis. The exam takes approximately 25-30 minutes.An order from your physician must be obtained to make an appointment for a CAT scan.CAT Scans at Pioneer Memorial are now available on site 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
MRIs
The term "MRI" stands for "Magnetic Resonance Imaging". MRI is a powerful magnet, together with a special radio antenna, that provides images of the brain, spine, and body without the use of x-rays or other ionizing radiation. MRI is an amazing tool for diagnosis. It is not used for treatments. An MRI examination can last for 30-45 minutes.Patients with a heart pacemaker, a surgically placed inner ear implant, or surgically placed blood vessel clips placed within the brain should not have a MRI. Pregnant patients should not have an MRI, except under special circumstances. Patients who have had previous accidents with a small piece of metal may be lodged, are at a greater risk with an MRI procedure and may require skull x-rays to exclude the metal area. An order from your physician must be obtained to make an appointment for a MRI. MRIs are scheduled every Wednesday.
Ultrasounds
An ultrasound is a non-invasive tool for the diagnosis of certain diseases, such as stones in the gallbladder or masses or cysts on organs throughout the body. It is often used in obstetrics for dating the fetus and ruling out abnormalities. This is a safe diagnostic tool, as no radiation is used in this procedure. Sending and receiving sound waves produce an ultrasound. Ultrasounds are available by appointment by calling (605) 326-5161.
