Pioneer Memorial was a host site for a Rural Trauma Team Development Course (RTTDC) this week, which was attended by Pioneer Memorial medical staff, Hospital nursing and laboratory staff, and local ambulances (Centerville, Hurley, and Viborg). RTTDC emphasizes a team approach to the initial assessment, resuscitation and transfer of trauma patient in a system used, concise manner. The didactic portion of the course addressed the following concepts: airway, breathing, circulation, disability, thermal injury, transfer to definitive care, special considerations (pregnancy, pediatrics, geriatrics), performance improvement, patient safety, and teamwork & communication. The course also included time for team performance scenarios and discussion on various trauma activities and events. Special thanks to course instructors: Dr. Paul Bjordal and Misty Brenden from Sanford USD Medical Center Trauma Program, and to special guest Rebecca Baird, SD Trauma System Manager.
