Diabetes is a serious public health problem in South Dakota and the number of South Dakotans who have the disease or are at-risk for it grows each year. Research shows that Type 2 diabetes can be prevented and lifestyle modifications such as proper nutrition and moderate exercise can reduce the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes by as much as 60%.

Education and proper care can help people with diabetes live long and healthy lives and diabetes self-management education can teach people with diabetes to be proactive about their health, resulting in a better health status and increased quality of life. Awareness of resources and access to care allows people with diabetes to obtain necessary services and help prevent the complications that diabetes can bring.

Diabetes affects 29.1 million people in the United States, or 9.3% of the U.S. population. Among U.S. residents aged 65 years and older, 25.9% of all people in this age group have diabetes and about 1.7 million people aged 20 years or older are newly diagnosed with diabetes each year. What does that mean for South Dakotans? Diabetes and prediabetes continue to be public health issues in South Dakota and the nation. Nearly 8% of South Dakota adults have been diagnosed with diabetes, or about 54,000 cases of diabetes. Moreover, diabetes is the 7th leading cause of death in South Dakota.

Please call Sharon Jacobsen, Director of Nursing, at (605) 326-3025 to sign up for the classes and for more information.
