Michelle joined the staff in January of 2009 and is the Director of Social Services at PMH&HS.  In this position her duties include assisting patients and families in the hospital, emergency department and our three clinics with mental health and economic assistance needs.  She also coordinates admissions and discharges to the nursing home, assisted living, and independent living facilities at Pioneer Memorial.  Michelle also offers supportive care to residents and families regarding end of life, mental health, economic assistance and life transition assistance.

Michelle received her Bachelor of Science degree from SDSU and is a licensed social worker in South Dakota.  She lives in Lennox with her husband Wayne and her children Andrew and Jonah.  Andrew works part-time at PMH&HS in the dietary department and will be going to Augustana this fall.  Jonah is a freshman at Lennox High School.

When not providing excellent social service skills, Michelle enjoys spending time with her family and attending all of her sons’ activities such as boy scouts, band, baseball, music activities and church. She also likes photography, scrapbooking, flowers and gardening.

Those who nominated Michelle for this award commented how hard Michelle works at her job.  She is currently going over the new federal guidelines that are affecting our industry.  Some commented about how great she is at creating policies and procedures.  Overall, the comments suggested how much of an asset to PMH&HS Michelle has become.

When asked what this award meant to her, Michelle responded, “I feel honored to have been chosen by my peers for this award.  I have been working as a social worker for over 20 years and it remains important to me to do my best to advocate for patients, residents, and families every day.”
