Wakonda Native joins Pioneer Memorial medical staff

Kayla Nielsen, CNP, native of Wakonda, SD, has joined the medical staff of Pioneer Memorial Hospital & Health Services in Viborg as a Certified Nurse Practitioner. She is seeing patients at the Viborg Medical Clinic.

Kayla indicates she has “always” been interested in the medical field. Prior to receiving her board certification from the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, Kayla served as a Registered Nurse for one year at Sanford in Sioux Falls and four years at Pioneer Memorial Hospital. At Sanford she worked as a post partum nurse and received certification as a lactation counselor. She is very interested in working with young mothers with questions or concerns about breast feeding and plans to renew her certification in October.

Kayla is a family medicine practitioner, but also has a strong interest in internal medicine, after serving an internship under Dr. Syed Asif Shah.

Kayla looks forward to meeting and working with her patients believing that, “To provide comprehensive care that focuses on quality and prevention, it is important to build strong relationships with my patients and partner with them to achieve health and wellness goals.” She received her undergraduate and graduate degrees from South Dakota State University in Brookings.

Kayla, a Viborg resident, is the daughter of Jim and Mary Nielsen of Wakonda, and has two brothers, Brett, who lives in Irene, and Alex, who is serving in the Navy in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Grace Tidball, Director of Ambulatory Operations, welcomed Kayla to the medical team by saying, “We are excited to have Kayla on board. Her background in nursing and familiarity with our facilities and area will help make a seamless transition to our allied medical staff. She is currently taking new patients and you may call the Clinic for an appointment.” Tidball added, “We are also excited to announce two additional members to our team who will start in the near future. Dr. Shamim Sultana, Board Certified Family Medicine Physician, is coming to us from a four-year clinic practice in Michigan. Hillary Turner, CNP, has also been hired and both are completing their orientation. They will be seeing patients soon, Dr. Sultana at the Viborg Medical Clinic, and Hillary at the Parker Medical Clinic. Both are extremely enthusiastic about joining our rural health team, and we look forward to having them. We should have announcements about their start dates in a few weeks.”
